ASUS Transformer Prime TF700/701T

The $599 64GB ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700T) is a high-powered, lightweight tablet with a detachable keyboard you’ll actually enjoy typing on. Not everyone thinks the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity is the best tablet on the market, but I can’t imagine wanting to own a different one. This is Android at its best, and you’ll love it.

So the Transformer Pad Infinity offers something different to the iPad and it delivers on many fronts. Despite running last year's Android 4.0, the tablet is a delight to use, with its gorgeous screen and speedy processor.

The 2MP camera front-facing camera is nothing amazing, but it’s a huge improvement over the 1.2MP on the Prime (which looked more like a 640×480 display while video calling). The Infinity’s camera still doesn’t look like a 2MP camera to me compared to say a proper webcam. My old 1.2MP HP laptop webcam from 2007 still outperforms it. With that said, the front-facing camera is better for making video calls over Skype or just the occasional snapshot. Just make sure you are properly lit.

The battery life here is respectable — we averaged around eight to nine hours of screen-on time with mixed tasks such as gaming web surfing and productivity. The dock added another four to five hours.

Given that the extra screen resolution gobbles some of that power you can’t expect a vast speed bump or a big increase in FPS in 3D games, but with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean now installed the Transformer Infinity just feels slicker, snappier and more responsive than any 10.1in Android tablet we’ve seen before.
